Sing a New Song: Where We Were, Where We Are, Where We May Go
by Helga Synnestvedt Childs
Big changes are happening in our church organization. Where is it going? Often it helps to take a look at where we’ve been to realize that change is a constant factor in life. Helga Childs takes stories of individuals who, in the past, had to make changes in the way they operated in the organized New Church. Those personal changes were often accompanied by hurt feelings due to differences of opinions between the various New Church branches. Next, Helga gives an overview of the 2010 Colloquium, in which people from all branches of the New Church came to speak about their vision of what it really means to be New Church. They came in the spirit of wanting to rise above differences. Helga points out that the most important thing is a concept Swedenborg often talks about—that recognizing the good intentions in others is more important than arguing about ways of thinking, and that when we are able to live in harmony despite differences of opinion, then the Lord’s kingdom can come to earth.
